The Extended Water Cycle

1: Water Companies borrow water from the water cycle using reservoirs or boreholes

2:
The water is piped to a water treatment works where it is cleaned and turned into drinking water

3: The clean wholesome, potable water leaves the treatment works and travels through a complex network of pipes until it arrives at your home.

4: You then use the water in a wide variety of ways including drinking, washing, cooking, cleaning, bathing and showering, watering plants and the garden, and many others.

5: After you have used the water in most cases it has become dirty again and so goes down the drain into the sewers.

6: The sewer pipes carry the water to a sewage treatment works where the water is cleaned up again.

7: The cleaned water is then returned to the water cycle by releasing it back into a nearby river, not necessarily the same one it came from.
